Log Analytics Makes Cloud Operations Smarter

Companies are going under the knife when it comes to digital transformation. They should scale their operations to the cloud, but in some way reduce complexity and disruption.

CloudOps aims to strike the right balance by intelligently resourcing, utilizing capacity, and mitigating issues – all with the help of cloud log analytics.

The DBTA held a webinar with Thomas Hazel, CTO and Founder of ChaosSearch and Kevin Petrie, Vice President of Research, Eckerson Group who discussed the role of log analytics in CloudOps, and the requirements, challenges, and benefits of log analytics for CloudOps.

Petri said that despite the hype, cloud computing is making IT more complex than ever. Systems persist in the workplace, thanks to technical debt, data appeal, and rule of thumb.

Cloud computing costs real money. You still need to manage apps, control data, and connect back to the local system.

CloudOps summarizes the processes and tools you need to bring IT stability and agility on cloud platforms, according to Petrie.

Stability and agility requirements include:

  • Applying ITOps to the Cloud
  • Configure resources, utilize capabilities, monitor and respond to issues
  • Meet service level agreements, support chargebacks, and help with compliance
  • Apply DevOps to the Cloud
  • Continuously provide applications and updates to users
  • Meet urgent market needs, innovate and make competitive improvements

Petri said CloudOps needs a deep knowledge of the components of the cloud, and that’s where log analytics comes in. Logs capture events such as user actions, application tasks, and calculating errors. Log analytics means ingesting, transforming, searching, and querying logs. You can identify patterns, anomalies, and trends, and elicit metrics to describe those trends.

ChaosSearch is a smarter and more cost-effective way to implement these strategies, according to Hazel. ChaosSearch’s patented indexing technology revitalizes your cloud data, making it fully searchable and enabling analytics at scale while significantly reducing time, cost, and complexity.
